It's been more than a while since I have blogged. Today just happens to be one of those days were it seems like it should be done. Now, what to say? It's difficult to jump back in after such a long silence. How about an outline of life since my last posting in May?...

Summer happened.
I worked.
School started.
I worked.
Fall happened.
I worked...

Most of my work has been freelance graphic design and consultation work, and I've had quite a few projects for the food industry. I have worked on milk cartons, pasta boxes and sliced cheese packaging. I even landed a job so large that I had to outsource some of the work. Luckily, Laurie is still my trusted design sidekick and she saved my a**. We met the most ridiculous of tight deadlines...ON TIME. I'll be able to post photos of projects I've worked on when they "go public".

So today, as I finish the last of my projects for 2010 (hopefully), I'm wondering how it became almost 2011. Crazy. I plan on taking the next few weeks off to hang out with my family, shoot photos, knit, ski, sled, and relax.

I've been home for a day and a half and I'm still decompressing. New York city was amazing. The National Stationery Show was busy, productive and overwhelming. It was incredible to see an entire industry pulled together under one big (leaky) roof.

Composition and Perspective (Midwest)

I have a new freelance design client and scads of new work. So...what do I decide to do? Add a photography project to my plate. I know, insane, right?

I decided to partake in the weekly assignment via the C&C Photography blog. I'm catching up on the assignments, so this is the project from last week.

Here is how I interpreted the assignment:

First I gathered random objects and very quickly arranged them as a still life. I did not spend much time on composing the objects. I figured I would challenge myself to create a pleasing composition without arranging and re-arranging it in front of my camera. I didn't move any of the elements. I just moved my camera, my focal point, my distance to subject, etc. Here are my results.

#1 take one image "as the eye sees it" from straight on
Notice how I placed the objects in front of a window? I did that on purpose to make different shots look completely different exposure-wise.

#2 stand on a chair and get a birds eye view

I combined two instructions into the for the above shot
#3 one close up or different angle
#4 shoot off center using neg space in composition

#5 extra credit "un focus" create a painterly or impressionistic feel
This one was tricky, and I don't think I quite got it right. Oh well, I'm not being graded on these, right? Right!

Business Cards (West Coast)

Well we officially have some new cards! Finally, after doing many other things on our little old presses, I have bit the bullet and made us some official cards. With the NSS quickly approaching, I thought we had better come armed with some pretty new cards. Enough of our quick print cards, it's time for the real stuff. It always seemed much too extravagant to print up cards for myself on something as pricey as Cranes. But I decided what the heck, I am going to take the plunge and be extravagant this one time. First color down, now on to the next! : )

Portfolio Work (Midwest)

I have been a busy bee these days. I have been building a local client base steadily for the last 6 or so months. My plan is to have a pretty full plate of design work come September of 2010. That's when all three of my kids will be in school full time! (No time to cry about that today, but it's a comin'.) I could spend my days getting manicures and watching Oprah, but I can't wait to be working again. Yes. I'm a design dork.

Anyhoo, I find it so interesting how my photography is working it's way into my graphic design work. Yesterday, I photographed some packaging samples for my portfolio. I have no studio lighting, so I had to work with available window light and white foam core for bouncing that light. All this time I spend behind the camera is really paying off. Though these aren't perfect, I feel like I was able to work with what I had and make a presentable solution.

Also, It was fun to go through my file cabinet and leaf through labels, boxes and other samples. When I pull out a sample I have all these fond memories of my old clients and the times Laurie and I spent working for them. I miss those days. And Laurie, I miss you the most. I'm glad we are going to be together in New York for a whole week!

Well happy February to you. I can't believe how quickly January went by. Our posts have been non-existent. Hopefully February will have a wee bit more time in it (I guess that is impossible since there will be less days than the rest of the months).

As 2009 comes to an end, it is time to reflect a bit around here. Time seems to be moving at a record pace around here. School and work seem to dictate most of our schedule, and the year is zooming by. For Ethan, third grade is half over, and Katie is halfway through her first year of middle school. First dance, check. Cell phone, check. So many things are just around the corner.

The upcoming year for me is already looking full. Amy and I are heading to New York in May for our first Stationery Show. From now until then we will have a lot of planning and prep work to do. Fun and exciting. We will be sharing a booth with some great letterpress gals.

My resolution for the next year is to try to slow it down a bit, and really enjoy the little things that can often go unnoticed. What's yours?

You can find Lucky Bee press in two more shops in the bay area this week. The first is in my neighborhood, Saffron and Genevieve. If you are in Santa Cruz, come by and check it out. The shop is a unique collection of furniture, and smaller items, both old and new. Perfect for gifts or doing something special for your home. The owner Colleen is an interior designer, and has amazing taste. The second new to us shop is Atomic Garden in Oakland. They have a unique mix of clothes and nik naks.

Last Saturday I participated in the only craft fair I have scheduled for this Holiday Season. It was probably one of my best fairs thus far.

I decided to limit the merchandise on my table and to restock often when things were sold. I also pre-wrapped products for instant gift giving.

I don't know if this was the reason for my stellar sales or if it was the beautiful sunny weather. Maybe the Craftacular folks promoted more this year? Maybe the economy is rallying? No matter. I was pleased to delete some inventory and to chat it up with shoppers and crafters.

This week and next I'm on deadlines for two new graphic design projects. So, I must post and run...

Quite Quiet (Midwest)

I've been a quiet blogger as of late. I thought I'd better post a little "me" update...

Here is the laundry list of my life's current events...
- 4 business trips since September (Oy)
- weekly freelance projects (I'm so happy to be working)
- 2 week family battle with H1N1 (all 3 kids plus Joey, I was spared)
- approaching winter and cold (we are outside as much as possible for now)
- jury duty (I was excused after one day)
- camera love (I'm back to daily photo taking and so happy about it)
- Craftactular this Saturday!

Today I print and get signage ready for this weekend's craft fair. I will take the camera so that I have some things to blog about next week. :)

Loving Black! (West Coast)

Color is funny. I totally have my favorites, and tend to print things in a palate that stays pretty consistent. Today I opened my black ink, and everything looked great in it! I probably went overboard, but I had so much fun printing common designs in an uncommon color for me. I tend to stick with somewhat bright and cheery colors, but somehow today, everything looked good in black! I really like the high contrast, crisp lines I got. BTW, these items will be up in our esty shop today! Have a great weekend!

Hedgehog Goodies (West Coast)

These came out really cute. Last week I had an order to put together some wedding favors for a customer who really likes hedgehogs. She wanted to put together a greeting gift for her out of town guests so when they check into the hotel, they will know how much she appreciates their coming all that way. I paired the blank hedgehog notes and hedgehog coasters, then came up with a hangtag to match. We did sample size packs of each to keep costs down.

DIY magazine did a special section in the winter issue of the magazine devoted to small time crafters. Lucky Bee Press was included in the mix of letterpress crafters! Thanks DIY! Congrats to all the hard working crafters who also were listed—about 50 in all! And a special praise to the other letterpress gals! Yeah letterpress!

I can't resist the call of new plates and blank stock. It seems to call me every time I walk by, and even when I am not that close. COME PRINT, COME PRINT, JUST A LITTLE, JUST SEE HOW I LOOK!!! Today I have a major deadline, and have not one extra second of time to print, but I couldn't resist. I lost, I skipped making dinner tonight and slapped on some ink! Los Gallos here we come!

I know I shouldn't grumble, but sheesh it's cold out. It is in the 40s and rainy. Brrr...Brrr...and...BRRRR! Why, just a week ago it was in the 70s. What happened to fall?

I guess it's perfect time to pull out another winter themed design. This is "wee snow girl". She has her warm hat and coat on, so she's not cold. Actually, I think she quite likes winter. I have decided to follow her lead, and smile as we head into the next season. At least for today.

I woke up this morning to note from Bazaar Bizarre that Lucky Bee Press will be at their holiday show! We can't be more excited! It is still a few months out, but we are really excited to be going this year! Amy and I have been busy planning goodies for the shows we are doing, paper is ordered at both locations, and we can't wait to get printing.

This Apple Picking Cardigan from Anthropologie would be a great addition to the working wardrobe. Amy and I were having a conversation about the lack of inspiration in our daily clothes. This sweater paired with a cute blouse might add that extra flair that we need... And so would that shopping trip over to Anthropologie!

Also, Cassandra let me know that the new issue of DIY Magazine is out, and it includes a feature on etsy and it's sellers is the winter issue. Roll Me Over (West Coast)

This week I opened a special package containing new rollers and trucks for my Chandler and Price. It is sort of like Christmas in September, without the any needles to vacuum up. I have been running my press with two older composite rollers and I finally decided to take the plunge, and splurge on some new rollers. While I was spending anyways, I thought I would just be brave and purchase the third roller that has been missing on my press since I purchased it earlier this year. With all this came the need for the additional trucks too. I decided on composite rollers for my press. I have been using them for the past few months, and they seem to work really well in my climate out here. I had tried rubber rollers before, and they caused me a lot of grief. So I am now operating with new rollers and trucks. Pretty cool!

Some birdy treats for my shop. I have been working on keeping some sets of notecards in the shop, and decided to do a themed set of goodies. Mini notepads, cards and hangtag/bookmarks.

One more thing, thanks to Paper Crave and Paper*Cakes Finds for the nice write ups!

A quick post here to show off my new 2 1/2' x 4' banner for my Renegade Chicago booth. I put grommets on it today and had it hanging on my screen porch for inspection. Hopefully, it will be easy to hang in the tent. Oh, and let's keep fingers crossed that the Windy City is sans wind for the Renegade weekend.

Caffeine Fix (West Coast)

Coffee is a big topic in my house, as I am married to a real coffee head. If Alan doesn't have his daily doses at regular intervals, he can be a bear! Lucky for me one of my favorite clients is a local coffee roaster. Lulu Carpenter's has three shops, with a fourth named Coffee Cat. They are roasters of fine beans, and specialty blends. I just finished up new packaging that we are getting ready to roll out in the next few weeks. These bags are hot off the press! I really like the way the matt and gloss varnishes work together. I think they will pop off the shelves at the local grocery stores! Buzz buzz!

Recently, I bought a small amount of blank coaster stock to play with. I slapped some of the stock on press last week. Voila. Coasters! I have a few for sale here.

I'd like to order more stock and print up a larger inventory, but they are a bit of a space hog. I'll wait to see if they sell...

Christmas in August (Midwest)

I have loved having a regular babysitter this summer. I have been able to take on a few extra freelance design projects. I'm caught up on my invoicing. And, I've been printing!

This is the first year where I have had all my Christmas cards designed and mostly printed by the end of the summer. I have one more design to print and I'm ready for the Holiday Season. Here is a look at a card I designed last year, but never got around to printing.

I'm happy to have some more typographic designs in my card line.

Work Space (Midwest)

Don't let the title confuse you. This is not a Midwestern Work Space. This is pure West Coast. You can't tell, but there are eucalyptus trees nearby and not a holstein in sight.

I thought it might be fun to give you a little peek at Laurie's home office. I snapped a few photos when I stayed with her last month. Her office is cheerfully filled with inspiration boards, family photos, artwork, crafty bits, etc. It is colorful, but not chaotic. Everything has it's place. It's fun isn't it?

Our entire family is finally finished with the summer swim team season. This year our pool hosted the end of season All City Swim Meet. All City is the largest swim meet in the Midwest and one of the 5 largest in the country. Almost 2000 kids competed!

The entire meet was run by parent volunteers. Each family was responsible for 4 half day shifts. I was the person in charge of taking photographs for the website. This was a great gig. I got to view the event from right up front. I had access to the entire venue, even the hospitality suite! It was exhausting, but I really feel like I got to see the magic of the meet.

Peculiar Craft Fair (Midwest)

I am back in Wisconsin after spending a few days in the Bay Area with Laurie. We participated in our second joint craft fair - Renegade San Francisco.

You may recall my first ever craft fair. No? I blogged about it here. The highlight of that fair was the ever popular, and so affordable, lawn spinner. I've been trying to come up with the must have craft item from RSF and am coming up blank. Was it the Rebe coats? Maybe. Was it the stuffed organs and glands? Could be. Or, the scuba kitty t-shirts? Hmmmm...

The thing that I think stood out at the fair was the attendees. Oh, we saw your run of the mill pierced/tattooed people. And, the mandatory crafty artsy fartsy types. But, this fair had something extra special. There was just a little more flair. I'll give you a little taste and you decide...

First we have this dude. I think he is a super hero. Though, I'm not sure which one and I'm certain that crime fighting isn't his expertise. He kept yelling "RUTH! Want a rematch!?!" O...K...?

Lastly these chicks kind of summed up the fair mood for me. Bright and fun.

So, here I sit back at my computer with fond memories of chatting with Laurie and Janice. It was a weekend to remember for many reasons!

Joey has been out of town for 4 days and I've been flying solo with the kids, which I hope explains this photo...

Today I had a sitter for 1 hour. I put some stuff for Goodwill in the car and zipped off to the grocery store. When I got there I realized that not only was I wearing my right flip flop on my left foot, but on the right foot I had on a completely different sandal. I debated going home and heading straight to bed, but decided to forge on and do my shopping. I even faked a limp in the cracker aisle to make my shoe attire look more appropriate to the cute doctor in scrubs assessing my feet. (Ha. Crackers. Coincidence? I think not.) Should I be concerned?

Getting Organized (Midwest)

I completely blew off celebrating the Nation's birthday this year. Why? My little people and my husband went up North and I stayed home to finish up some work and letterpress details. I spent 8 hours in my office yesterday and today, so far, I'm at 7 hours. I designed, invoiced, printed, stuffed envelopes, babysat the neighbors cat, went for a run, photographed new products, reorganized my Etsy shop and cleaned my office! It feels so good to get organized. This week all I need to do is find a big box and ship my wares to California and then I'm all ready for Renegade.

Speaking of Renegade, I believe I now have 7 new products to display there. I have scads of new mini notepads:

And, I have other goodies fresh off the press already listed in my Etsy shop.

I can't wait to travel back to my old digs and hang with Laurie.

Moo! (Midwest)

I don't know if any of you know this, but June is Dairy Month in Wisconsin. Do you care? Probably not. But, for me growing up in the country in Southern Wisconsin, it was a big deal. Ok. Not a big deal. But, an excuse to eat more ice cream, and celebrate cows. For many more years than I care to admit my dad wore a different cow t-shirt each day in June. (Just re-reading that sentence makes me groan a little bit).

It seems appropriate somehow that I participated in a photo shoot last week that involved cows. I know. Glamorous. Yet, fun. My main purpose was to do some business portraiture and a few shots of people doing what they would be doing if they were a consultant, a vet, a farmer and some cows in a barn. (I'll leave that up to your imagination.) The clients were fun and it was a good experience for me.

This week I'm going to finish up a few letterpress projects to ship to California for Renegade San Francisco. I can't wait to journey back to the Bay Area and to hang out with Laurie. Hopefully, I will have some brand new journals to debut.

Moonlighting (Midwest)

Last Sunday I assisted my talented friend and mentor, and photographer extraordinaire, Kate on one of her family photo sessions. I think this is the sixth time I've helped her do her thing. As you can see from Kate's photo above I'm having a lot of fun. I did some kid wrangling, reflector holding and a lot of picture taking.

I really enjoyed the family we were shooting. They have 5 kids and they are so incredibly sweet with each other. Being the oldest of 5 kids I'd like to say I can relate, but I remember one too many battles from my childhood.

Anyway, since I have my camera with me most days I get a lot of "are you a photographer?" questions and I never really know what to say. I have finally come upon the right answer which I feel fits me. I respond by saying something to this effect,

"Well, I'm a graphic designer, but I occasionally moonlight as a photographer..."

So there you have it. That answer makes me feel better about spending too much money on camera lenses and it keeps me from feeling guilty about not taking on more graphic design projects.

Yea, It's Friday! (West Coast)

Today has been one of those days. I am glad it is nearing cocktail hour out here, because I am ready! I started out my day putting together mini rat coffins with my friend. Yes, I know. Sounds funny. Long story. Next, after lunch, we were rear-ended on the freeway after running over a mannequin. Yes, I know. Even stranger. Luckily we are both fine, and able to laugh about it.

The week was pretty successful in printing. I was able to just about finish up my line of six new spring cards. I am happy with the outcome, and already have sold a few on etsy. I am gearing up for another big week of printing, and getting ready for summer. School is almost out and I am more excited than the kids! I can't wait to skip the alarm!

Well that is the bell, it is time for that drink! Have a good weekend all!

Blooms (Midwest)

As summer approaches I'm taking so many flower photographs for my photo a day project that I think it's transferring to my letterpress work. It seems like all the cards I'm working on have some sort of floral element to them these days. Can you see what I mean?

These cards are from my flower illustrations, but I'm still trying to find a way to incorporate elements of my photographs directly into my letterpress prints without re sketching. I must deliberate that some more and get back to you...

Voila! (Midwest)

I had some time Friday to get on press and finalize a few letterpress cards. I'm pretty pleased with the results.

I created these cards with my "new" vintage wood type. I really enjoy printing with wood type. The impression is smooth, yet textured. And, setting the type in the chase is so satisfying. It's like doing a jigsaw puzzle. Well. Sort of.

I'm planning on offering this design as a personalized folding note set. I pre-printed the chocolate layer that says "a note from _______ (pencil icon)". I chose the chocolate because it's such a versatile coordinating color. I ran the sample in red ink. Laurie and I have been discovering that people like red. Now my task is to finalize a quantity to offer and find some packaging.

I'm checking in with nothing super new to report. I'm almost finished with one of my big freelance brochure projects, and the second one is well under way. I'm hoping to have printed pieces to show you soon.

Busy day today, my brother is in town from Cali with his group and my mom is around, too. Gotta run.

Oh. This photo is one of my new mugs from the Museum Shop at the Art Institute in Chicago. I wish I had bought a couple more colors, but they were very pricey.

An Efficient Weekend (West Coast)

Hot off the press this evening, I finished up printing the last of my new line of cards. I am pretty excited about the cards, and especially this one with very tight registration. I was a bit nervous about printing it, but with my new Kort Quads it worked out quite easily. I am happy I took the plunge and purchased my new guides. I had been using photo corners to hold my paper in place, but my new Kort Quads are much more efficient. The paper truly stays in place. : ) These will be up in my Etsy shop in the next day or two.

New Stuff (West Coast)

I have been busy printing on my new press, and this is one of the first of my new card designs to go up in the shop. I am very excited with the new look, and will be posting more this week as I finish them up. Hopefully I will have time to get on press this week!!!

More Corners (West Coast)

The search for a perfect solution to rounded corners has kept me up lately. I know it is sad, but my favorite pre-cut paper has been discontinued, and I have been at a loss to how I am going to cope without it. One of my best selling cards prints on this nice rounded corner stock, that I have been buying pre-cut. Both Amy and I have been looking at corner rounders, and the result has been OK, but I really like the angle of the original diecut card.

I found the perfect solution, and it even cuts multiple cards at once! I purchased this Lassco corner rounder, with the 1/2" die. It is a perfect match! Today, everything on my desk has rounded corners, including my test stack of cards! The ivory stock is the diecut card, and the white stock is the Lassco cut card. Pretty cool! It even catches the corners in a handy little trash area.

TGIF (Midwest)

This was a long week. We had lots of rain and Sam was off school for 4 days for parent teacher conferences. Sophie was home for a day sick and now Joey is complaining of a sore throat. I'm trying not to panic and run through the streets screaming "Run for your lives. The swine flu is here!" Instead, I'm going into preparedness mode. I have spray hand sanitizers in all the kids backpacks and we are washing hands again and again and again...

Now, I need to simmer down and focus on my design work. I am behind on invoicing and if I could finalize my projects that will allow me to clean my plate a bit and maybe even earn me some time on press.

Also! I feel cheerful because May is here. May is my birthday month and for as long as I can remember the arrival of may was always bright and colorful to me. It meant flowers and leaves on trees. Sunshine, cake and presents. Then, summer and swimming pools.

Rounding a Corner (Midwest)

A couple weeks back Laurie and I had this long phone conversation about the disappointing news that our paper vendor was no longer offering rounded corner, flat notes in A2 size. I know. It's really a tragedy. I think we went through all the stages of grief during that phone call. Denial. Anger. Bargaining. Depression. Acceptance...

I decided that in order empower myself and move on I needed to locate the perfect corner rounder. I ended up deciding that a hand punch (think scrapbooking tool) would be doable. I could punch corners while watching tv (think Desperate Housewives of Orange County) and make my own rounded corner flats. Heck, I probably have other printed things that would be cool with rounded corners (think grocery lists).

So, after a week or two traveling to various craft stores, buying what looked like workable and sturdy corner rounders I found one I liked. And, three that I didn't which were returned. Presenting the Fiskars hand-squeezy-view your paper-round your corner-and watch a paper piece flip up into the air model. I like it because it cuts easily and consistently. The blue stock below is a duplex card stock, at least 110 lb. You can see the corner is pretty clean and has about the same corner radius as the precut flat beneath it.

Who knew a craft punch would be so exciting that someone would photograph and write an entire blog post about it? Not me.

Goodbye Old Friend (West Coast)

I sold my old Kelsey this past weekend. I placed an ad on Briar Press and Craigslist. I also looked up some wanted ads on Briar, and emailed a few people. I remember when I was looking desperately for a press how hard it was to find one without feeling completely gouged for the price. I charged what I paid for it. I got a good deal on my new one, and felt I wanted to help out a fellow letterpress person starting out. It was a nice transaction. I know it went to a good home. It was sad to see it go since I really learned to print on it. But at the same time, it is nice to have the elbow room for my new bigger press. I have a large spot on my work table to spread out when I print. It will be nice to finish up my plate and send it out. I have been working on some new designs for the past few weeks. It is hard to find the solid time to complete them. Hopefully in the next few days I will have them ready to send off for plates.

It Feels Like Spring! (West Coast)

Well the kids are back in school today. We surprised them with a trip to Hawaii to visit their cousins over spring break. It was very fun to unexpectedly pick them up from school with the car loaded, they were totally confused. Ethan asked if we were going to the beach—I think he thought for a picnic lunch. I told him yes, but laughed. We drove off to the airport. It was great.

Now I am back, somewhat rested, and excited to print again. I have been busy with graphic design projects over the past month. So even though I have been printing on my new press, I haven't posted in quite a while. Here is a peak at a card I designed last year, but was never able to get a nice print out of on the Kelsey. The C & P knocks it out with ease. It is so nice to have all power of the new press, with so much less work. My Kelsey didn't have the muscle to give me a deep impression, and even a clean print on something this large. The daisy prints nice and clear on my new press. The impression is really nice too!

I've been a pretty lame blogger as of late. I'm smack in the middle of spring break and the kids are keeping me very busy. Since, I'm heading out of town for a couple days I figured it would be a good time to post before I dash off...

I have a couple design projects running right now. I'm quite pleased to have print projects on my plate. I was sketching brochure ideas the other night and it was so fulfilling. I plan to work as much as I can this weekend (around Easter activities) to get a jump on the work I need to get done.

Oh also, I was able to do another photography assist gig last Monday. I helped hold reflectors, talk to the model and even shoot a bit (see photo above). I'm really enjoying my camera. Every day (well, most days) I look forward to taking my picture of the day. Even when I don't have my camera with me I find myself noticing things and thinking "that would make a nice photo". Sometimes when I'm talking to someone I catch myself moving so I can view them in better light. This really surprises me. Now I need to find a way to incorporate my photography and my letterpress. More on that soon...

Spring Where are You? (Midwest)

I can't believe March is almost over. If you were to look outside my window you would understand why. We have a couple new inches of snow covering the grass that was beginning to turn green. The crocuses must be wishing they had waited to come up. And, I'm sure the birds are annoyed that the nests they have been building are snow covered.

I find myself mildly discouraged by the snow, yet optimistic because it feels warm and things sound like spring.

This last week I have been in and out of frame shops trying to find the right frame for the letterpress print that I'm donating to our preschool's silent auction. I found a frame that has a weathered barn wood look to it. I liked how the texture of old wood relates to the wood type I used to create the print. I'm so pleased with how it looks I even listed a print in my Etsy shop. I haven't been listing many new items and hope to post more prints soon.

Speaking of Etsy, Laurie and I have been discussing consolidating all our cards at our joint shop. I may keep amyb13 open for fine art prints and more limited run cards. Change is a brewing.

Oh Boy (Midwest)

I had another semi successful day of letterpress printing yesterday. I've decided to see if I can get both Pilot presses up and running. It would be nice to have them both "calibrated" so that I can rely on either one. I could run two colors simultaneously, one on each press.

So, I put my old rollers back on my main press (the blue & red press in the back) and my newer rollers on the other press (closest). I'm having a lot of trial and error getting my press settings set. I'm taping rails, adjusting the platen, adding packing, etc. Right now, neither press is set the way it should be. I've decided that a second set of new rollers is in order. Then, I won't have to rework each press depending on which rollers are running on it.

As I do all these test prints with various plates, (wood type, vintage blocks, linoleum, etc.) I'm creating some letterpress collage prints. Here is one print in progress. I'm liking the textural effect of the rough paper with a light hit of ink. Also, the overlapping of colors is pleasing to me. I also like the idea of creating modern art from vintage blocks. I foresee a letterpress agenda forming.

I have barely come up for air this past week. Since I moved my press in, I have been printing away daily. My morning starts as soon as kids are off to school, I am inking up as the leave. I have been so excited that each day I end with lining up my plate for the following morning. I get the impression just right, then go fix dinner. The spot reference is to my printing projects. I have been printing up a variety of spotted cards and notepads that will go out to some wholesale orders early next week.

I saw this cool tip on Boxcar Press that I have been using to get the alinement perfect. You attach a piece of tape the front of the plate, place it on your paper exactly where you want it to print, then put the paper in the press, and run it onto the boxcar base. It is so cool. I am off today to see a printer friend of mine who is retiring. I am going to buy up some old ink he has. Hopeful in colors I am lacking!

After much anticipation, my big baby has actually arrived. An 8" x 12" Chandler & Price Old Style baby that is.

We have had four weeks of bad weather. This week was nice and sunny, and the person who was delivering my press was available to deliver today. So today is the day! I am so excited to start playing around. Alan and I cleaned out the garage space this weekend, and made room for the new press. The space still is a work in progress, but it is looking pretty good. I can't wait to ink this baby up. It is in really good condition, after I oil up the stiffer moving parts, it should be good to go. Maybe Friday!

Today marked the first day in weeks that all three of my kids were at school. We have been taking consecutive turns with the stomach flu. In retrospect, it would have been way better had we all gone down at once. Instead, every fourth day somebody else got sick for 3 days. Bleck.

Anywhoo, I have been super motivated to create. I sketched last night, printed last week and printed again today. Above you see my contribution to the Paper Stories letterpress swap. I wasn't going to post about it, but figure none of the other swappers are watching this blog. And, if they are they won't mind. Right? (I admit I'm snooping all the participants blogs to see what they are working on.) I will probably have lots to post about when I receive my swap package in a week or two. I'm so excited.

Ok. I must go prod the pot roast I have in the oven. I hope to post again later this week with a peak at another print I have in progress.

Notepads (Midwest)

I forgot to post this photo from several weeks back. My friends, Joanna and Chrissy, aka the dynamic sister duo, were at Broadway Paper and saw my notepads on a shelf. A SHELF!!! Not some skibbly, spinny rack thing tucked in the back of the store. A swanky shelf. Right next to that awesome fox fabric whatchamacallit. Whoohoooooo! Thanks girls for being so stealthy and snapping me a photo.

Those notepads turned out to be a good seller for me. They are tedious to make since I hand trim and bind everything, but I'm working on streamlining that process. In fact, I banged out another batch for a special order the other morning. Check it out.

Well, it's too glorious to sit inside any longer today. I must go have a walk in the sunshine. Tomorrow the temps drop and we will have more snow.

Back to Reality (Midwest)

As I look out my window this morning it's hard to believe that spring is coming. We have 7 new inches of snow and are planning on going sledding. Again.

Last week's trip to Puerto Vallarta seems like weeks ago. It was a wonderful vacation full of laughing, swimming in the ocean (with baby dolphins!!!), margaritas, beach strolls, etc. Joey managed the home front perfectly. I returned to a clean and happy household. Unfortunately, I brought back a stomach virus. I was down two+ days due to that and now poor little Sam is struggling with it. I'm guessing Hannah and Sophie will be next.

I have big plans to work on some fine art prints this week. I'm so inspired. In fact, last night I couldn't sleep because I was designing in my head. If I have time this week I'm going to start the first layer of my print. This is optimistic considering the goings on in the immune systems of our family. I'd better hold my breath AND cross my fingers. We shall see...

This is a photo from a shipping box I got in the mail this week. It made my day for two reasons. First, I love that someone spent the time to draw up a personalized message for me. This particular scene is right up my alley (love the breasts on the woman and the ice cream cone). Second, within the box was my latest Etsy find. I ordered a very interesting art object titled "Stand by your Striped Man" from Minnesota artist, gilhooly. If you have time check out her etsy shop.

Below you see my Man sitting on my mantle next to another art piece by Leslie Dill (some info that here). The pottery is from Madison artist, Gloria Van Dixhorn.

I'm sure my Striped Man will migrate around the house, but right now he has me thinking about displaying a little collection of images of the human form on my mantel. I must go dig out my life drawings...

I am in the process of looking for a new press. It is time to expand around here. This is one I am close to purchasing, and if all goes smoothly, I will have this baby in my shop sometime next month. Just need to do a bit of coordinating.

I have been struggling with my current press for a while. I think I want it to do more than it is capable of doing. I love it, and it has served me well. But it is time for a bigger machine. I am looking at a 8 x 12 C & P floor model. I think that is a good size for what I want to do, and it will fit into my shop area without feeling cramped. I have been working hard these past few months making space for my workshop in our small garage. I have a nice area carved out, and will probably add a few more improvements before my new press moves in. I am really excited though! This will make my printing life go much smoother!

It has been a whirlwind of a Holiday Season around hear. My first holiday season as a card printer. I wasn't expecting the rush of sales, and was pleasantly surprised with how much traffic our Etsy sites got. Fun stuff! Between that and my graphic design workload, I don't think I have blogged since November. Time goes quickly.

After a full month away from my press, I am dusting it off and printing today. My plate is on, and the impression is lined up. I thought I would start with some reprints of cards I am low on for letterpress inspiration. Then as the week goes on start to work out some new designs. I have a few ideas, but haven't gotten them down on paper yet.

2009 Awaits (Midwest)

Well, we have about 16 more hours of Christmas vacation. I haven't posted over break so I will line list some of the highlights...

•The rats climbed up the Christmas tree. Tree sap + rat fur = not good.
•I had two cosmos in one evening and wasn't even buzzed. This is remarkable. Trust me.
•I was on my letterpress once for a quick print job.
•Indoor soccer, bowling, and inflatable bouncing sessions were all achieved.
•I had a fun, paid (!) photography gig as a second shooter at a wedding.
•One of us caught a stomach flu and at this point we don't know how many others were exposed.
•Sam cut most of his left eyelashes off.
•We have had 3 family game nights with charades being the most popular game.
•I ate 9 pieces of chocolate fudge on Christmas Eve.
•We had at least one day were we never got out of our pjs.
•We sledded. And, sledded. And, sledded again.
•Hannah became my photo sidekick when she got a digital camera for Christmas.
•Fights happened and were sometimes resolved.

All and all we managed to end break with a trashed house, overtired occupants and an empty fridge. Well done, I must say.

My week has been busy. Trips to the post office = 4. Trips to the mall = 3. Snow shoveled in the driveway = 10 inches. As I sit here and watch another 2-4 inches blanketing the outdoors, I sigh. Christmas is almost here. Hallelujah!

So, yesterday I had a friend come over to chat and learn how to use her Gocco. I hauled out the inks and other crafty stuff and we talked (geeked) out about art, design, crafting, etc. I find myself up early with a head full of ideas about what could be a next project. And, since my desk is clean I'm sketching and thinking. It's a nice way to begin the day. Miss K. thanks for the playdate. I'm so pleased to connect with someone with similar interests. :)

OK. Now I need to gripe about my keyboard. It seems the nine/left parenthesis button has pooched. Argh! I had to go into one of Laurie's posts to copy and paste a parenthesis. And (as you know) I use them all the time. I will try to clean and examine the keyboard today. I have weak McGuyver skills, so I'm fairly confident this will not be fixed. Rats.

I hear kids upstairs. Soon three children and 2 rats will descend and need to be prepared for school so I need to go slam another cup of coffee.

First stop, Anthropologie! (West Coast)

As per tradition out here, I went out shopping with my mom for my birthday. First stop, Anthropologie! My all time favorite store. I like to go there for special occasions and treat my self to something I wouldn't normally buy. Yesterday it was these two items. Both were something I wouldn't normally do, but I know I will enjoy them quite a bit. I love the asian inspired print on this shirt, and the color is truly beautiful in person.

I have always had a thing for aprons, in fact I wear them every night when cooking dinner. They are cute to look at and they help save my clothes from the inevitable spills while cooking. The chocolate brown little owls on this pattern are stylized and really cute. Retro yet modern, and my favorite colors too!

Craftacular (Midwest)

I must write this post quickly as I'm very distracted right now. I'm being lulled by the weather liars on tv. "Come. Come listen to the madness that is the winter weather about to befall you." Ok. They don't talk like that but man o man we are in for some serious weather tonight. Sleet. Snow. More snow. Then wind. Yikes and double yikes.

I had a wonderful day, Saturday, at the Craftacular. We were busy all day. I had a greater number of sales this year, but the total price per sale was lower. So, my sales totals were about the same as last year. One observation. More folks were using their credit cards than last year. I hope for all our sakes that the economy picks up by this time next year.

So, now I am down to small bits of remaining inventory. One koi fish pack, one poppy/twig set, etc. I'm debating whether to reprint or not. I'd like to design something new for the new year. And, there's Valentine's Day after that. Options. Options.

Ok. Off to stalk the weather channel.

That time of year again! (West Coast)

I am into the full swing of the holidays around here. Eggnog's out, tree is up, handmade gifts are being finished up. I think I have just two gifts to finish up, and that should go pretty quickly.

The only thing that is not cooperating with my holiday happiness is the weather. We have had perfectly beautiful California weather. But I am waiting for a winter storm to come through. We have had no real measurable rain, no snow in the Sierra's. It still feels like the ending of summer. It has cooled down quite a bit at night, but our days are sunny and nice. We have a trip planned to go up to the mountains in a few weeks to go sledding, but unless we get a storm to come through, we won't be doing much sledding.

Holiday cards prep area. Holiday Hedgehogs been my big seller this season. I have been selling these cards in our Lucky Bee Press Etsy shop. I have had to do one reprint so far. I hope I printed enough for the rest of the season!

Craftacular Preparations (Midwest)

The Craftacular is this Saturday (the 6th). Whoohoo! Preparations for this fair have been the easiest yet. There will be an 8' table and a chair waiting for me at the show. My show box is still packed from Renegade. Most of my inventory is ready. I just have a few new signs to create and then a list of things not to forget. Today I spooled up some candy cane striped baker's twine. The spools look so cute. If they don't sell I won't be disappointed. They will make great stocking stuffers. I'm also thinking I may have some time to create some sort of display on the table. Maybe a clothesline with cards? Or a Christmas tree decorated with gift tags? I dunno. *thinking* An 8' table is a lot of space to fill isn't it? *more thinking...*

Ok. I must go fetch Sam from preschool. It's snowy here so that means it takes twice as long to tote him anywhere. There are stray mittens to find, boots to put on then take off because the snowpants have to go first, snow to eat, mittens to get wet and then be exchanged for dry mittens, more snow to eat, etc. etc. Ok. Off I go.

Holiday (Midwest)

I'm checking in for a quick mid Holiday post. Joey and I have been busy with his brother in town, my longtime friend Missy, and the kids. Thanksgiving was very successful this year. And, by successful I mean nobody melted down, the food was tasty, at least one of my kids ate, I got to eat, nothing was broken (oh wait, Sam did take out a vintage ride on toy that probably had sentimental value), and we got to enjoy each other.

In the topmost photo you see a vegetable animal creation that I made. In our family each Thanksgiving (for some 25 or so years now) there is a table set up with a huge bowl of various vegetables, fruits, toothpicks and sometimes carving utensils. All those attending Thanksgiving are required to make a vegetable animal for placing on the table. It's a fun tradition because it's fun to do yourself, but it's even more fun to see what others come up with.

The Scent of Saturday (Midwest)

I shuffled into my office all bleary eyed this morning. With coffee in hand. Ready to check email. I sat down and then picked up the faintest, most delicate, teensy weensiest of scents. Press wash. Not strong and chemically in the way where you wear gloves for your hands but wonder if your nose needs protection. But, light and pleasant. A reminder of yesterday. Yes. Yesterday. Sigh. I printed. And, not just that. I set type.

For weeks I've been wanting to whip out some gift tags for the Craftacular. I've been thinking about what plates and blocks I have laying around to work with. I thought, why not a simple type solution. So yesterday I pulled out a drawer of 42 pt lead type. I set up the words. To. From. And locked them onto the press. They printed backwards. Doh! I always do that. After some rearranging and adjusting. Voila. A simple little gift tag. I lurvs it. Because it's simple. And, type. And, because it was fun to create. Nuff said.

So my hubby, Joey, was born in the wrong decade. I think he was meant to live in about 1929 or so. He has always had a thing for history and collecting old stuff. It would not be unusual to hear him rant "They sure don't make stuff like they used to!" I swear his is an 80 year old man sometimes. "Kids, get out of my yard!" "Don't just stand there with your hands in your pockets! " I'm sidetracking here...

After many years of finding, collecting and storing things in every corner of our house. He has rented a modest little booth at a local antique shop. I'm kinda excited to help him with his side project. The plan is to stock the booth with his style of crap, and hopefully recoup our monthly booth fee.

We're calling ourselves Brick House Salvage. Because we live in a Brick House. And...yeah that's it. (* Did you get the Brick House lyrics reference in the post title? Did you?) I plopped some type together to create a very quick and dirty logo (top idea). Being the crafty gal that I am, I punched some tags, cut some twine and voila. A hang tag is born. Today we start stocking the booth. It will be like playing house and playing storekeeper all at one time.

Pretty yarn! My latest yarn purchase from Purl Soho arrived a few days ago. Some of this is marked to be Christmas presents, while some of it will be little bits I keep for myself. I am working away on little gifts for my family and friends for the holidays. My kids are always excited to have me make something for them... They will each have a few little treats. I am glad they appreciate having handmade gifts.

These are a few of the wholesale card orders that are heading out to local shops. We had six wholesale orders this month! It is a good start. It has definitely given me an exciting push to work harder, and produce more. I received my paper order Monday, and I hope to get to it next week. I have a little one at home with Strep, so we have some shows to watch and games to play.

Monday (Midwest)

This is a photo I took yesterday. I hooked up with the Madison Flickrmeets people and did a little photowalk on the Near East side. It was very cold. 31 degrees I think. Windy, and snowing on and off. My fingerless gloves, which I thought were so clever and helpful for picture taking, turned out to be stupid. My fingers hurt and I cursed my foolish fashion sense as I drove home one handed. Would I ever let my kids wear fingerless gloves? No, I tell you. No.

But hey, I am excited to discover that Lucky Bee Press had a mention in the Holiday Card Guide at Poppytalk. Laurie, isn't that exciting?!? I signed myself up for a spot in the next Poppytalk market. I'm hoping to get some Christmas card traffic. Thanks Poppytalk!

This week's calendar is looking pretty good for me. I need to print. I would really like to bang out a couple notebook covers and some gift tags. I might even hand set some metal type. I'm really looking forward to it. It's been too long.

Finally, my Internet connection is back. I had about 9 days (9 days!)* without it. It was very frustrating. I had to jump onto Joey's laptop to read emails. I even checked my email at the Apple Store in the mall the other day. I used the 17" Macbook Pro they had on display. It was mighty nice. Want. Want. Want.

*Anyone catch the Ferris Bueller near reference here? 9 times? Yeah. I know. It was subtle.

Hold On (Midwest)

This is an image I took a few days ago for my photo a day group on Flickr. It was a windy day and these little lady bugs were just holding on to a flimsy little branch. I think this photo is a good metaphor for how I have felt for these last few weeks. I have been holding on, worried yet hopful, waiting for the elections to come and be finalized. And, today as I sip my coffee and look out my window, there is sunshine, optimism and relief. It's time to let go of the branch and fly freely.

Warming Up (Midwest)

We finally caved and turned on the heat in our house. It's so nice to have warm feet again. Though, I have to say having the heat off was good for my Xmas knitting productivity (see above).

Regarding knitting, Joey and I spent part of our Monday date night at the bookstore (yes, you can call us nerds) where I leafed through some new knitting books. I was really intrigued by some of the projects in Luxury One-Skein Wonders. A small project with a fancy schmancy yarn might be what I need right now. I must remember the title (or remember that I don't have to if I remember to come back to this post) and look for it at the library. Also, I've been meaning to link to this knitting pattern. These are super cute and would make quick, fun and thoughtful Xmas gifts. They are sort of like these. Don't you think?

On the letterpress front, I've decided to run a monthly shop promotion over at my shop. I'm going to feature a card or card set each month, and list it at wholesale price. First up for November will be a 4 pack of Scribble Bird cards for 8 bucks. I have a smallish inventory of these left and figured why not try to liquidate them.

Mini Card Portfolios (West Coat)

It has been my goal since I started on this letterpress adventure, to sell my cards. I have been in search for a way to display them when I show them, and on a recent trip to my local art store I found these little mini art portfolios. They are 5" x 7", Itoya brand with black paper lined pages. I slip a sleeved card into each page pocket, and fill them with about 10 cards each. If I put more than that they look too bulky.

I have been working up the nerve to take them around to local shops. Today was the day. My first day. My response was good. I am really encouraged. I will go out again Wednesday and Thursday around my town, then next week head out a bit further. After years of working so closely with Amy with all things graphic, I am not used to doing things on my own. I have always had a sidekick to handle these stressful little situations. I was surprised by my lack of nerves when it came down to the actual moment of show and tell. Amy, your turn! Try it! It was actually fun, and rewarding!

Christmas in October (West Coast)

It is getting close to Halloween, and my kids are definitely in the dress up mindset. Alan is working on a very cool costume for Katie, and Ethan is set with his ghoulish choice. They are all outside today decorating our house for next weekend. We live in a neighborhood that takes holidays seriously. We expect about 400 trick or treaters coming to our door Halloween night. We run out of candy each year, setting our budget for how much we will spend ahead, and closing up after we run out.

With all this going on it seems strange to be thinking ahead about Christmas, but as a crafter and printer, that is the mode I am in. I have been working on Christmas presents, and printing up holiday cards... This is my latest print run, and I really like the way the illustration came out. I am starting to box up some sets and will have them up on Etsy soon.

Warmth or Lack Thereof (Midwest)

Ok. It's frigging cold here. Outside. Inside. All over. I fear November, can't even think about December, and may have to move by January.

In an effort to save on our winter heating bill, I agreed to "wait" to turn on our heat. We've made a fire in the fireplace every night. We have a brand new high tech, mica space heater that moves about the house. But, mind you, it was 59 degrees in our dining room the other morning. 59! Joey says, "it's just a matter of putting on more clothes each morning". He and I will have to have a little "talk" tonight.

You can probably imagine why I am knitting fast and furiously. If I could knit wool long underwear I would! Leg warmers have been my thing. Here's a pair I finished in 5 days. I used up two balls of Noro kureyon yarn from my stash. They are super warm and I even had someone stop to ask about them at the grocery store. I'm pretty pleased with myself.

Ok. I will stop griping about the weather and get back to my son (the one who has frozen solid on the couch). I'll post in a day or two with photos of items to go up on Etsy.

I'm home from my 5 day adventure in the Nashville area. I could probably blog several pages about the Franklin, Tennessee area and the things I saw, ate and did there, BUT, this blog is "supposed" to be chronicling my crafty-designy side so I will post something related to that.

I present to you Hatch Show Print. Hatch is an example of a successful letterpress business. Located right downtown, the Hatch people have been designing and printing show posters for Music City for quite some time. I think the business originally opened in the late 1800s creating advertising for local companies. Today you can come in and watch them work, pet their shop cat (if he isn't grumpy from being stepped on) and browse and shop.

The things I liked most in the shop were the postcards made from make ready sheets. I love that they don't let these practice prints go to waste. I bought several cards which I'm deciding what to do with. Maybe frame them as a set. The image below is a make ready sheet that they had woven into an interesting wall hanging. Very clever and fun to look at.

It's good to be home, but it's too cold here. Winter cometh.

I See Blue (West Coast)

OK. I am coming up for air. I have been under various projects, and haven't made time for blogging lately... Thank you Amy for picking up the slack. Love your photos that you have been taking. I am jealous of your lovely new camera, and your cool lens!

I have been busy with my needles lately, and have quite the stack of rags going... Amy and I started these back in Chicago during our cold wet craft show. I am on number six, but last week when I set up my little stack, I only had four finished. I love the colors of the yarn. It is the first time I have tried this out — new from Blue Sky Alpaca, it is called Skinny Cotton. Blue Sky always has such a pretty palate of colors to choose from. I have a few more skeins left, but I am itching to buy a few more... Always more possibilities to the color combinations.

I printed Monday morning, but I don't think I will be printing again this week. I am having ink troubles, and need to figure it out before I print more. My ink seems to be drying immediately. I am not sure why... I will try to post on Briar Press in the next day to see if anyone has any advise. It is late my time, and I need to get up early.

Spectacular Fall (Midwest)

The tv weather liars said that today will "probably" be the last warm day we will have until April. Now, normally this news would depress me. I'm too smitten by the beauty outside to be sad. The trees are amazing. Reds, yellows, oranges. I love fall in Wisconsin.

It's hard to focus on indoor tasks when it's so wonderful outside. Here is my laundry list of goals for this week:

1. start knitting leg warmers in preparation for the cold weather
2. continue to shoot a photo per day to post in my group (so far so good)
3. letterpress on Wednesday
4. finish my a holiday design project for a client
5. go to Tennessee to see Joy on Thursday

I think I will wait until tomorrow's cold front to start attacking this list. :)

Bokeh Sunday (Midwest)

"Bokeh is a photographic term referring to the appearance of out-of-focus areas in an image produced by a camera lens using a shallow depth of field", as per Wikipedia.

You may have already figured out that I'm into bokeh since almost every photo I post on this blog blurs out. When I take a photo I'm purposely trying to use focus and depth of field to enhance my composition. So, in an effort to improve my photography skills I signed myself up for a self imposed photography project. I joined the 365 Bokeh flickr group. My task now is to shoot and post one photo per day for a year (gulp) that incorporates bokeh. Yes, I realize I may not be able to squeeze this into my busy schedule. I might even have to eliminate a boat cruise here a manicure there, etc. Oh wait, I don't get manicures or go on boat cruises. I'm good!

So today, besides shooting one photo, I need to make more of these notebooks for a wholesale order. Other than kid activities, those are the only things on my calendar. It should be a nice day.

Moving (Midwest)

No. I'm not moving. Been there. Done that. But, my good friend, Joy did. (Damn her.) As a good bye gift I offered to make up some letterpress moving announcements for her family. I printed them a few days ago and mailed them off to her today.

Here is a detail of the design. The left column has illustrations depicting her "old" life in Wisconsin and the right column is the "new" life in Tennessee.

I definitely have to go visit and while I'm there I hope to go here.

Knitting or Xanax? (Midwest)

Dang, TV is hard to watch these days. It's so stressful. There are reminders of the intensities of our current situation everywhere. In an effort to keep myself calm during my sporadic tv viewing, I am back at my knitting. If I'm about to sit down for the evening news, I need my knitting for protection!

I started this warshrag when I was in Chicago with Laurie. The pattern is from the Mason Dixon knitting ladies. Love them! I see they have a new book out, too. I must add that to my wish list.

I'm sure to finish the warshrag during the VP debates, so I will need a new knitting project. This is exciting. It will require going to the yarn store for some hard core yarn fondling. Maybe I'll take my camera. The rows of colorful fibers would make a good study. Any suggestions on what I should knit next?

Red (Midwest)

I have surfaced to post. I've been sick. Sam decided to share his intestinal virus with me last week, and then his cold. Of course my body was so clever, and created a nifty sinus infection from the cold by products. Anyway, bedrest, aspirin and antibiotics saved me and here I am. Posting. With not much to say.

I will just put up a few pictures from yesterday's apple picking excursion. Red wagons. Red apples. Red berries. Red t-shirts. Hooray for a theme!

Rain-e-gade (Midwest)

Laurie and I have successfully completed our first Renegade Craft Fair experience. I can sum up the fair with one word - wet. It rained almost 7 inches the first day, a record one day rainfall for Chicago, and another 2 or 3 inches the second day. Despite the rain, people still came out. And, when the rain stopped it got really busy. Sales were not bad considering the weather. A huge thank you to those of you who donned your rain gear and came out.

Sharing a booth with Boh Bon Soap Co. was definitely the way to go. Setting up a wet tent in a downpour was much easier with three people. And, we were able to take breaks as often as we wanted.

The time we spent before and after the fair was great, too. Our hotel was very cool and smelled great (seriously).

We bought two day El passes to get around. We ate yummy food at Penny's Noodle Shop, Milk and Honey and CBA. We shopped Wicker Park and Armitage (twice). Yesterday, when the rain was finished, we drove through the Loop and up Lakeshore Drive. I am in love with Chicago. It's a fantastic city.

So now I am home unpacking, drying my shoes, stowing the show tables, etc. It's nice to be here and think about what's next. I have a moving card to print and some wholesale inquiries to follow up on.

Off to Chicago! (Midwest)

This week I have been packaging up card after card after card after card after card after card after card (you get the idea). It's time to road trip to the most amazing craft fair ever. It's time for Renegade!

Tomorrow morning after I drop the squirts at school I'm off to O'hare to fetch Laurie for our long weekend of craft fairing, knitting, eating, hoteling, shopping, etc. I don't think we have ever been on vacation together, just the two of us. I can't wait. Of course we will be busy with Renegade on Saturday and Sunday (come see us!), but there is much time to play beyond our fair obligations.

I'm excited to introduce Laurie to Chicago. I lived and worked in the Windy City several years ago and I still miss it. Whenever I'm there I get a rush. Sometimes, I fantasize about buying a loft in Wicker Park as a weekend home. I could set up my loft with fully stocked art studio complete with letterpress area. Sigh.

Back to reality, I need to tidy up a few things and then start packing. Fingers crossed that it doesn't rain as planned.

Holiday Buzz (West Coast)

Temperatures out west are soaring this past week, but I am busy inside working on my winter stash of cards. It seems strange to be printing up holiday cards when it still feels like summer! My printing area is in my garage, and by 11:00 a.m. the heat is unbearable. My ink is drying before I finish each run. Today I cleaned the press twice for one run of red ink. I am making progress though, and the weather report shows cooler temps to come next week.

Off to get some ice tea!

Next week is Renegade in Chicago and I have been working hard trying to print a variety of cards for our booth. I liked the way these floral cards turned out. They are my first larger run of multiple colors. I printed about 60 of them. I plan on selling groups of 3 as well as singles.

Summer Sets (Midwest)

Sigh, It's the End of Summer (West Coast)

We were relaxing in Yosemite last week, then came home to an abrupt end to our leisurely summer. We had three birthdays parties in three days, and a few other end of summer gatherings as well. It was really nice, but I am glad to have a bit of quiet print time this week.

My kids start back to school today! I don't know who was more excited, them or me! Not that I don't treasure the summer time we've had, we've had a blast. We have spent the past few months going steady with our group of friends out here—pool, beach, boardwalk. But I am anxious to get back to work and start printing again. I really want to get ready for our upcoming craft fair. I leave in two weeks to head out to see Amy, and do the Chicago Renagade Fair. It will be my first craft fair, but in stead of being nervous, I am excited. Yea!

This morning I worked on printing a few boiler plates for my cards—one for a flat note, and one for a folded card. I had made them up a while ago, but haven't had much luck with printing small text on my Kelsey. It usually fills in, or prints uneven. With the kids being in school, I had the time to get it right today. I went to work after drop off, and knocked out the remainder of my card stock. I am pleased with the results. I ended up removing all my packing in the press to get a cleaner print. Also, I was trying not to get a deep impression, so the text would not show through onto the inside of the card. I made up a gray for the ink on both, but the flat note is much lighter. I didn't want the ink to show through.

This past Sunday I worked on finishing up a plate for Boxcar Press to print out this week. It has shipped and should be delivered tomorrow. I am excited to have some new artwork to print from. If timing goes as I planned, I will be printing 3 days next week.

Bad Hippo! (Midwest)

I came downstairs this morning to discover this ghastly scene. It appears as if Hippo has knocked off Spiderman. That's Spiderman's dislocated leg on the table behind Playmobile man. I'm glad the photo is blurry because it's very gruesome and you probably don't want to see it. Naturally, I'm riddled with anxiety and thoughts of concern for all the innocent toys and figurines in our household. The Polly Pockets and My Little Ponies don't stand a chance against a killing machine like this. Playmobile Man may look like a strong enforcer in this photo but I know him and he's a coward.

What should I do? I'm considering binding Hippo with duct tape, putting him in my trunk and driving out into the woods. But, considering we found hippo injured and abandoned (or so I thought) on the bike path I know he's crafty. And worse, what if he has ties to the Hippolino crime family!?!

Any comments with advice would be appreciated.

11 More Days (Midwest)

This is our sweet Sunny. She comes when she's called, is cage trained, likes to snuggle, and has some cute habits. Who knew a rat would become such a cherished pet?

I woke up this morning thinking "I should post on the blog today". I had some early morning lucid dreaming involving youtube and the internet (!?¡). I will dismiss any notion of dream analysis and the idea that dreaming about the Internet may be a sign of daytime addiction, and instead compose a post...

We registered the kids for school yesterday, got teacher assignments, compared rosters, etc. I spent a huge portion of that time thinking about the near future (11 more days) when they go back to their day jobs. Some of my friends when asked if they are glad summer is almost over say they are so sad that their kids are leaving. They enjoy having them home and cherish every minute of time they spend with them. I will set aside my guilt for the moment and admit I am not one of those moms. I don't enjoy the fighting and whining part of having them home. I miss my time. Maybe it's selfish but what I want is a little bit of each day to myself. Don't get me wrong, I do like to be with them, just not 24/7. Anyway, I am really, really looking forward to the school year. I want to take on some more freelance work and of course work on my letterpress.

Speaking of letterpress I'm finally posting a photo of the notepads I made over the weekend. They were created almost entirely from salvaged materials. The chipboard from craigslist, the paper insert sheets from 3 reams headed for someone else's trash, and the pencil image from a vintage printer block. The only part that I purchased new was the binding. I hope to have more notepads in different sizes and designs soon.

Just 11 more days, hold on Amy, you are almost there. With that I must go make breakfast and break up the squabble that is escalating in my living room.

To the Point

I am at the tail end of a 36 hour respite from my family. Joey took the kids up North for an overnight and two days of swimming in the lake. Go Joey. Go Joey. Before he left I made of list of things I wanted to do while they were gone. I actually wrote them down. As if I would forget! So, far I have accomplished 4 of 5 items. Can you guess which one is undone?

1. ride my bike
2. eat a nice meal out
3. print
4. pick up my camera filter
5. clean the upstairs

Number 5 had no business being on my list, right? Clean the house? C'mon! When the kids are gone? Not a chance. Ok. I scratched it off the list (I really did). I think I wrote it initially for Joey as an incentive to split town. Whoops.

Earlier this morning I cut up a bunch of chipboard with the intention of making little note books. The chipboard took the ink beautifully. And, it's just the right density for a good impression. I don't have photos of the prints on the board, but above is something else I printed. My thought here is that the person sending the card can write their message in front of the pencil. I've always thought that greeting cards are better when customized. And, this one card can become appropriate for any occasion.

All right. I have to go make the best of what's left of my peace and quiet. I should probably change out of my pjs and head outside. It's sunny and warm. Bye for now.

Say Cheese (Midwest)

Last Sunday Kate picked me up and we headed downtown to do a little photography shoot/walk. We sneaked into the Hilton and headed up to the top of the building. From there we discovered that the top floor party room was left unlocked and unattended! We had to enter. The room had a bar, a bookshelf with arty vases and vintage books, and an amazing view looking down onto Monona Terrace and the lake. My first thought was to mix myself a drink, but then I remembered the task at hand which was learning to take pictures.

I'm still in the initial stages of mastering my camera, so I mainly just try to take a picture that isn't blurry. I do consider the composition as I line things up, but it's pretty much an unplanned let's see what happens approach. Kate talked about where to stand to catch interesting light, and about background color and scenery. It was very interesting. Lots to consider as I continue practicing.

After we exhausted our Hilton photo opportunities we strolled outside and shot flowers. The evening sun was low in the sky and seemed to get tangled in the petals and grasses. Very pretty.

The evening was perfect for strolling, chatting and taking pictures. It was such a nice little outing. I'm glad to have a friend who shares her creativity and skills with me.

Finally, I'd like to send a thanks out to Diana of Pravina studio. Diana creates simple and modern bags and accessories. She also maintains the blog, Heartland, which highlights her discoveries in the Midwest. I met her this summer at the Craftacular and she sent me a note several days later asking if I wouldn't mind being featured on her blog. Hello!?!?? Of course I wouldn't mind. Here is the post. Lucky Bee Gets Lucky! (Midwest)

Laurie called me yesterday with some exciting news. Lucky Bee Press has a card featured in the September Issue of Family Circle Magazine! Here is a photo of page 25. Right under the "25" you can see our (small) Koi Card. They even linked our Etsy shop. Whoohoo!

Ok. Enough horn tooting. I'm now returning back to regularly scheduled weekend plans...

Vacation (Midwest)

I have returned home after traveling with the kids 4 hours North to my Aunt and Uncles fabulous house on Sand Lake. We had such nice weather. We swam several times a day. We played many card games. We picked currants that were turned into currant jam, pie and a mixed fruit pudding which is a family favorite. I went for sweaty runs outside until the horseflies chased me indoors to the treadmill. I meandered along the lake with my camera (and new lens) shooting nature photos. I even read two books. It was such a nice, relaxing week.

Unfortunately, our drive home was interrupted with bouts of vomiting from the way back seat (sorry if that was TMI). Sam's stomach decided to remind us that the vacation was officially over. At least we are in our own beds again and have access to our pediatrician if need be.

So, I'm now forced to come down from the leisure high I had on vacation. I'm back to my list. I have an Etsy order to go out, some ideas to sketch, and a craft fair to plan for. There is dust on my letterpress and it needs to go. Time to get back at it!

I went to the post office this morning to mail a package and I discovered some cool new stamps. I love the Charles and Ray Eames Stamps that have recently come out. I bought three sheets, and left thinking I should have purchased more. They are so pretty. Every once in a while a little something like this happens and it makes my day a bit brighter.

So... I started out with that photo because the next photo will be way, way too boring for most. But, just consider that my emotions looking at this second photo are what Sam feels in the first photo. Sheer joy.

Get this, thanks to Joey and his craigslist karma, I scored a box of 900+ sheets of chip board off craigslist today. For free! Weeeeee! Jump. Splash. Hop.
